Volunteer opportunities

Key volunteer roles

Volunteers provide support to families affected by workplace tragedy, share their stories as members of the Speakers Bureau or in print, and plan and help out at events. See our key volunteer roles and complete the volunteer application form to get started today!

Steps for Life Volunteer

Steps for Life – Walking for Families of Workplace Tragedy is Threads of Life’s signature fundraising event each spring. Steps for Life walks are planned by volunteer committees, who look after all aspects of the event, from finding local sponsors to promotion to logistics. We also need volunteers to help on walk day with set up, registering walkers, route marshalling, food service and more. Learn more at the dedicated Steps for Life website.

Community Engagement Volunteer

Community Engagement Volunteers raise awareness of Threads of Life’s mission and services, build relationships with local organizations to expand our reach, and share our resources and stories to amplify our message.

Volunteer Speaker

Personal testimony is one of the most effective ways to teach people the importance of health and safety, and demonstrate the consequences when something goes wrong. Our volunteer speakers are all Threads of Life members who have personally experienced a life-altering workplace injury, an occupational disease, or work-related fatality in their family. Presentations take our speakers into schools, conferences and workplaces. Requests and arrangements for speakers are coordinated by Threads of Life staff.

Volunteer Family Guide

Volunteer Family Guides offer one-to-one peer support. They are patient and active listeners, with good self-knowledge and compassion. Training will reinforce knowledge of the principles of grief, communication skills and healthy coping skills. To become a Volunteer Family Guide you must have personally experienced a workplace tragedy, and be far enough along in your healing that you are able to offer your support to others who may be just starting.

Trade Show Volunteer

Threads of Life is regularly invited to attend trade shows and fundraising events. We rely on our volunteers to represent us, speaking with trade show booth visitors, sharing information, distributing materials and answering questions. These opportunities are ideal for volunteers who have flexible schedules and may only want to volunteer occasionally.
